In the autumn of 2023, we presented the exhibition Panorama (and other satellites), which extended from a recent collaboration between Markus Schinwald, Phileas and the Biennale de Lyon, for which Schinwald produced an installation presented as a walk-in panopticon titled Panorama (2022). Walls covered with woven textiles depicting apocalyptic motifs were interspersed with manipulated Baroque war paintings and artefacts borrowed from local museum collections. By combining these very different elements, Schinwald blurred historical and formal borders and evoked a dystopic atmosphere apparently suspended in time.

The development of physically tangible exhibition architectures for the presentation of his work is a recurring aspect in Schinwald's oeuvre. These spatial stagings serve not only as backdrops to his painted and sculptural works but also stand as artworks in their own right. Through subtle interventions and architectural manipulations, he creates stage-like spaces which turn viewers into protagonists and add a dramaturgical layering to their visit.

The exhibition at Phileas focused on Schinwald's architectural stagings, albeit in scaled-down versions. Rather than the large-format installation presented in Lyon, the artist here presented its preparatory model. The majority of his exhibitions are preceded by such models, which play an important role in the visualization and realization of projects - from the development of the concept to the execution of complex room installations.

Along with the model for Panorama, the exhibition also featured similar objects related to past projects at various institutions. Panorama (and other satellites) was Schinwald's first solo exhibition in Vienna in more than 15 years.
