Ashley Hans Scheirl and Jakob Lena Knebl: Soft Machine

A collaboration with the Austrian Pavilion at the 59th Biennale di Venezia.

The inaugural exhibition at Opernring 17 was a unique collaboration with the Austrian Pavilion at the 59th La Biennale di Venezia. Exactly two weeks after the official opening in Venice, a presentation conceived and produced in parallel by artists Ashley Hans Scheirl and Jakob Lena Knebl opened in Vienna. The exhibition presented the work of Scheirl and Knebl alongside that of their students at the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Applied Arts respectively.

Funding support for the exhibition has been provided by the Austrian Federal Chancellery.

A rich and vibrant programme of public events also accompanied the exhibition throughout the summer months, including a concert, a film screening, and several talks and discussions. Funding support for the public event programme has been provided by the City of Vienna.

For their exhibition Soft Machine, artists Ashley Hans Scheirl and Jakob Lena Knebl invited their students from the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Applied Arts to also present their works in the exhibition space. The display of students' work was rotated three times during the presentation, in keeping with the collaborative approach that Knebl and Scheirl have adopted for their project in Venice.
