In autumn 2023, Phileas and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport co-produced the architectural design and a series of new works by Soshiro Matsubara for the group exhibition Bruno Pélassy and the Order of the Starfish at Haus am Waldsee in Berlin.

The project explored the work of French artist Bruno Pélassy (1966 – 2022), a multi-faceted artist whose small but diverse oeuvre embraced drawing, sculpture and fashion design. His diagnosis with HIV at the age of 21 radically shaped his work, aesthetic, and approach to subjects such as illness, infection, ostracism and death, and tragically cut short his life at the age of 38.

Matsubara’s architectural design for the exhibition at Haus am Waldsee consisted of labyrinthine fixtures, wall hangings, mirrors, carpets, and a number of Mannerist ceramics and lamps.

For the exhibition in Vienna, Phileas will present elements of the exhibition architecture along with objects by Matsubara that share Pélassy’s preoccupation with intimacy, vulnerability, and the interweaving of the historical and the fictional, of reality and dream-like states. Soshiro Matsubara (born 1980 in Hokkaido, Japan) lives and works in Vienna.
