Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński

Donation to Belvedere, Vienna

Following a research trip to Austria at the invitation of Phileas, the curator Khanyisile Mbongwa invited Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński (born 1980) to produce a new work for the 12th Liverpool Biennial. Kazeem-Kamiński works across various mediums and practices, including photography, collage, time-based media art, performance, installation, and writing. In her research-based approach, she focuses on the oppression and marginalization of Black people’s experiences and narratives and develops artistic strategies of resistance in her work.

In Respire (Liverpool) (2023), residents of Liverpool’s Black community, the oldest in the country and dating back to the 1730s, are breathing into a red balloon. The sound of breathing moves in waves from the individual to the collective and back again. Together, the performers share, hold and imagine breathing space for themselves and others, blurring lines between past, present and future. Respire (Liverpool) is accompanied by the sound installation Keep On Keepin’ On (for Nile) (2023), developed in collaboration with artist Bassano Bonelli Bassano.

Respire (Liverpool), co-produced for the 12th Liverpool Biennial and co-funded by the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport has been donated by Phileas to the collection of the Belvedere in Vienna.
