Greta Schödl
Donation to mumok - Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien
Greta Schödl (born 1929) focuses on writing as a visual element, overlaid on natural materials, textiles, and everyday objects and her work can be linked to the movement known as Poesia Visiva (‘Visual Poetry’). It emphasizes script's rhythm and appearance over its content, exploring the connection between language and image.
The sculptural work Marmo di Carrara (2024) features a marble stone meticulously inscribed by hand with the capitalized letters of the word MARMO (Italian for "marble"). This harmonious pattern is thoughtfully punctuated by gold dots, which are interwoven into the lettering, resembling musical notes and adding a dynamic visual rhythm.
In 2024, Phileas supported the presentation of Greta Schödl's work at the 60th Venice Biennale, curated by Adriano Pedrosa. The work Marmo di Carrara was also part of her exhibition Street Poetry at Phileas, which marked her first solo exhibition in Austria in over 40 years. Following Schödl’s exhibition in Vienna, Phileas has donated this work to the collection of the mumok - Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien.
