Liesl Raff
Donation to mumok - Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien
Liesl Raff (born 1979) is a sculptor who experiments with industrial and natural materials like latex, steel, and pigments. In her sculptures and installations, the artist explores the nuances of human relationships and social interactions. Raff’s work challenges the viewer, encouraging interaction and collective experiences.
The expansive sculptural installation Club Liaison (2024) by Liesl Raff was commissioned as Austria's first national participation at the 15th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea. Inspired by cabaret stages, theatres, and underground clubs, hand-cast, purple latex curtains are draped around the room in different lengths and layers, with a stage at its centre, functioning as a performance space. The space can be activated by a variety of performers.
Following its presentation at the 15th Gwangju Biennale, Club Liaison entered the collection of the mumok - Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien and marks Phileas' first donation of a national pavilion to a public collection.
Club Liaison was commissioned by Phileas - The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art with a grant from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport and additional support from the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.
